Ka-50 “Black Shark”

A Russian attack helicopter with a striking appearance and odd feature not common on other competing designs. NATO refers to it as the Hokum-A, whereas it’s two-seater counterpart the Ka-52 “Alligator” is known as the “Hokum-B”. The Ka-50 is also referred to as the “Werewolf” by other non-NATO nations.

What’s interesting about the Ka-50 is that it has an ejection seat, which seems suicidal on a helicopter. Supposedly before the pilot ejects, the dual rotors are blown off of the helicopter frame with an internal charge at the bases. This gives the pilot a clear and safe ejection from the cockpit without being sliced into pieces.
